CRIC Public seminar with Wendy Pearlman, Northwestern Uni: 'Understanding Syria: The Lived Experience of Protest, War, and Exile'

CRIC is pleased to announce that associate professor Wendy Pearlman will be visiting CRIC on the 13th of June 2016. In relation to her visit Pearlman will be giving a public lecture with the title: 'Understanding Syria: The Lived Experience of Protest, War, and Exile' based on her forthcoming book on the narratives of a diverse and large number of Syrian refugees. Join us for a fascinating journey into the lives and thoughts of ordinary Syrians and their thoughts on the revolution, the war and their hopes for the future.

After the lecture CRIC invites everybody to join a reception with Syrian food and to enjoy photo exhibition of pictures taken in revolutionary Syria by documentarist and CRIC postdoc Josepha Wessels.

Abstract: What can Syrians’ stories teach us about who they are and what they seek? Wendy Pearlman has conducted open-ended interviews with more than 250 displaced Syrians in Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon. She finds that individual narratives coalesce into a collective narrative whose arc paints a portrait of silence and intimation under an oppressive regime before 2011, expresses the transformative experience of individuals’ participating in protest against that regime, conveys the resilience of communities enduring unspeakable violence thereafter, and offers a window into the challenge of becoming and being a refugee. Pearlman’s talk will share a selection of Syrians’ personal stories to sketch this humanistic interpretation of the current conflict in their homeland and how it has transformed those who have lived it. She will conclude with lessons about what we can learn from listening to these and other Syrian voices.
