Abstract
The paper investigates the situational micro-dynamics of violence during the anti-regime protests in Tunisia (2010/2011) and Bahrain (2011-). The paper supports Collins’ (2008) hypothesis, that situational conditions allowing the perpetrator to establish emotional domination and overcome barriers of tension and fear are necessary for violence to occur. On the basis of visual data, reports and interviews conducted with activists in Bahrain and Tunisia the paper firstly shows how state and protest violence took several pathways where the perpetrator was able to establish emotional domination by attacking from afar, above, behind, at night or from within a vehicle. Secondly, the paper investigates nonviolent situations in Bahrain where violence have been avoided under situational circumstances of surprise or emotional equilibrium, but also how this balance is fragile and easily changeable to the advantage of the perpetrator. Finally, the potential and limits of nonviolent situation management is discussed in relation to violence prevention and dilemma situations.
