About research seminars
The research seminar is a forum for academic debate, organized around the paper and is conducted on the assumption that the paper has been read by participants.

The paper
Donatella’s paper reflects on contemporary forms of cultural production and reproduction that are generated and virally distributed on web 2.0 platforms. In particular, it focuses on the “raised hand” meme which originated from a regime-backed advertising campaign in Syria, and has been widely remixed and shared on social networking sites since 2011. Throughout the analysis of the Syrian meme the paper explores the broader connection between creative expressions of participatory culture boosted by the social web and political movements. It raises the question whether these user-generated forms of cultural production can turn into public venues for a collectivity to get together and shape new ideas of active citizenship. Ultimately, the paper reflects on the implications of Internet-generated cultures for our understanding of political movements, and the emergence of novel public sphere(s), particularly in authoritarian contexts.

Time and place
The seminar will be held in CRIC’s meeting room (25.0.01), Øster Farimagsgade 5, 1353 Copenhagen K, 15th September 2014 from 13.30 to 15.00.
