CRIC seminar: Has social media failed political change in Syria?

This seminar focuses on the role of the Internet, particularly on social media, in portraying and narrating the events that have been unfolding in Syria for more than five years. From an information black-hole Syria has turned into one of the biggest producers of user-generated content. Has this overwhelming amount of grassroots initiatives, websites, independent news outlets, produced powerful enough counter-narratives? Can these media initiatives counterbalance regime or extremist groups' propaganda? What are the pros and cons of such a crowded alternative media system in a heated political situation such as contemporary Syria?

14.30 - 15.00: Donatella Della Ratta, Postdoctoral fellow Cric, University of Copenhagen

15.00-15.30: Hussam Eesa, co-founder and spokesperson “Raqqa is being slaughtered silently”

15.30-16.00: Rune Friberg Lyme, Programme Manager, International Media Support

16.00-16.30: Round table discussion moderated by Joskha Wessels, documentarist and Visual Anthropologist
