Call for Papers: Tenth Nordic Conference on Middle Eastern Studies

The Tenth Nordic Conference on Middle Eastern Studies, titleded 'Formations of Middle Eastern Subjectivities - Cultural Heritage, Global Structures and Local Practices', will take place at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, 22-24 September 2016.

Papers and roundtables on all topics within the field of Middle East and Islamic studies are welcome, including – but not limited to – the following themes:

Researching the Middle East beyond the confines of area studies; The urban bias in Middle East studies; The meanings of age and generation in the Middle East; Global/local Islam and Muslims’ religious practices; Configurations of Conflict in the Middle East; Nationalism and post-colonial identities; ‘Being there’: Accounts, testimonials and political subject formation in the Middle East; Middle Eastern economies in global and historical perspective; The makings of cultural heritage in the Middle East; Cultural memory and the meaning of place; Middle East Media; Visual, literary, and popular cultures; Language politics and identities; The Middle East and global networks: Migration, diaspora and transnationality; Minorities in the Middle East; Middle Eastern Christians within and outside the Middle East.

The deadline for submitting proposals for a roundtable or a pre-organized panel is 31 December 2015. Please submit a proposal comprising the names and institutional affiliations of convener, chair, and panelists, as well as title and abstracts of about 150 words for the panel as such and for each paper presented. A pre-organized panel consists of a chair plus 3-4 panelists with single papers.

The deadline for submitting proposals for individual papers is 31 January 2016. Please submit your name, institutional affiliation and the title and abstract of your paper not exceeding 150 words.

Registration will be possible between 15 February and 31 May 2016. The registration fee for members of the Nordic Society for Middle Eastern Studies is 600 DKK, for non-members the registration fee is 900 DKK. The registration fee includes three lunches and two buffet dinners at the university. In addition there will be a free bus shuttle between the campus and the city in the morning and after the evening keynote roundtables.
